Will mom getting married affect the amount of financial aid I can get for college?

I have always been in a somewhat low income family (single mom supports 3 kids and works at a restaurant). She is getting married in about a week to a guy that makes somewhere between 30 and 50,000 a year in heating and cooling. Will this new income affect the grants/financial aid I can receive? I don't expect the guy to pay any part of my college funds. I have a 3.5 GPA in honors classes and got a 27 on the ACT etc etc. If I fill out the FAFSA before they get married would I be elligible for more aid? Will mom getting married affect the amount of financial aid I can get for college?
If you are in school now and receiving fin aid currently you have already applied for the current school year, so it won't effect you immediately. The next application will be available Jan 1, 08. (This is for the 08-09 school year and should be done as soon after Jan as possible).

To answer your question, yes, absolutely this will effect your fin aid, especially the TYPE of fin aid you get. You will qualify for loans, but your continued grant eligibility is a extremely iffy.... No one will be able to say for sure, it really depends on the exact amount of his income and assets.

So what you will need to do is when they file taxes in Jan/Feb you will need to do the fafsa combining all their income and assets. (It doesn't matter if they file taxes together or not). Make sure you include in the ';number in household'; field - yourself, your mom, your new step-dad and any siblings or new step-siblings he supports as well.

Here is a good publication about fin aid. You might want to check out the different types of student loans... just in case.

Good Luck!!Will mom getting married affect the amount of financial aid I can get for college?
This won't affect your financial aid until they (your mom and new husband) file their first tax return together-- next school year. This school year goes by last year's taxes-- it's always a year behind.
about the future: Keep a separate credit history from your couple.

I found interesting information about your answer, college loans,SCHOLARSHIPS, college grants here. Goodhttp://all-student-loan-consolidation.bl鈥?/a> luck!
idk, i dont think you would have to list that sort of thing because they wouldnt know i dont think...but it doesnt hurt to apply now, nice ACT score, i gotta get a 30 to get scholorship into the college i want
it will affect your financial aid as they look at the income of the custodial parent and their legal spouse. of course he will not be paying your college, but the people who give out the money consider his income in the equation. he does not make a ton of money but it may have some impact. I would fill out the fafsa prior to the marriage so it wont affect you the first year
Hi there,

Good question. If you are filling out your FAFSA before December 31, 2007, and your Mom filed taxes as a single person last year, then you are okey, ***Until December 31, 2007, that is. Only your mom can sign your FAFSA for this year.

However, after she is married, even if she files jointly, that may or may not have an impact on you. I know 30-50k sounds like alot of money to you, but it really isn't. Also, merit-based scholarships typically do not consider family income.

I highly recommend that you get some advice from your campus financial aid counselor. They are there specifically to answer questions. They are very familiar with most of the scenarios and will point you in the right direction.
Hi Notori...I am not a legal person but I think it would only effect you IF the new dad adopts you legally so he would have all financial terms on your collection. Does that make sense? Have you tried to google your question or can you ask some legal person without charging you? That would be my guess though. Hey, good luck and hope my advice is true!? :D
