I married someone in another country last year. Can I claim her on my tax return?

She still lives there, and does not have an ssn.I married someone in another country last year. Can I claim her on my tax return?
Congratulations, you are married. You can file MFS or MFJ. If you file MFS, you can claim her exemption if she had $0 income.

Unfortunately, to claim her exemption (or to file MFJ), you need to attach form W-7, documentation and such to the tax return and mail it to the ITIN unit in Austin. This will add 6-10 weeks to the processing time.

Note, you CANNOT file as single. At best, you file MFS and mail your return to the service center, pencilling in NRA next to the SSN field.
